Elizabeth Castle at low tide

St Aubin's Bay, Jersey, British Channel Islands

Construction of Elizabeth Castle (centre) was begun in the 1590s and the castle was named by Sir Walter Raleigh during his governorship of Jersey 1600-1603. The castle was continuously garrisoned until 1923 and was at times held in opposition to the rest of the island during the English Civil War
